A Dialogue Concerning Awareness and the World

A public introduction to Awareness-First Theory

A note to the reader This dialogue is a public-facing introduction to Awareness-First Theory, or AFT. It is written independently of, but in conversation with, a formal academic research programme developing AFT’s account of awareness, appearing, active inference, physical law, and the explanatory gap. The dialogue is not meant to replace the technical papers. It is meant to open a door .

The persons of the dialogue Sofia, a philosopher of experience, attentive to colour , feeling, appearance, and the lifeworld. Marco, a physicist and neuroscientist, loyal to mathematical science, measurement, brains, models, and physical explanation. Julian, a mediator , sympathetic to science but persuaded that the explanatory arrow must be reversed.

The place A late afternoon in a quiet room overlooking a garden. On the table: a cup of coffee, a glass prism, a white rose, a small brass pendulum, a sketch of the Necker cube, and a notebook filled with equations. Outside, leaves move in the wind. Light enters through the window and falls across the table.

I. The white rose

Sofia

Look at this rose.

Marco

I am looking.

Sofia

No, not botanically. Not as a plant. Not as a reproductive structure. Not as cellulose, water , pigment, and molecular arrangement. Look at it as it appears.

Marco

White petals. A green stem. A faint shadow on the table.

Sofia

Yes, but do you hear what you have just done? You named what appears. White. Green. Shadow. Table. And yet none of that, as lived, is in the equations of physics.

Marco

The equations explain what produces it.

Sofia

They explain wavelengths, reflectance, surface structure, retinal stimulation, neural processing. But where in that description is the whiteness as seen? Where is the softness of the petal as imagined by sight? Where is the way the rose is simply there, present, before us?

Marco

You are describing subjective experience.

Sofia

That phrase already moves too quickly. “Subjective experience” sounds as if the rose first exists in the objective world, fully described by physics, and then some private mental gloss is added inside me. But that is not how things are given. The world appears. The rose appears. The light appears. Your face appears. Even the idea of a brain appears. Even physics appears.

Marco

Physics does not just appear . It describes the world independent of us.

Sofia

Does it? Or does it describe invariant structures disclosed within experience? You read instruments. You see marks on screens. You write symbols on paper . You discuss results with other embodied beings. Science is not done from nowhere. It is done in the world as lived.

Julian

Perhaps we should begin more slowly.

Marco

Please. I already feel we are slipping toward mysticism.

Julian

Not mysticism. A prior question. Before asking what the world is made of, ask this: what must be the case for any world, object, law, measurement, body, or theory to appear at all?

Marco

That sounds like philosophy.

Julian

It is philosophy, but not only philosophy. It is also the question beneath perception, neuroscience, physics, and consciousness science. Every scientific description presupposes that something is disclosed: a measurement, an observation, a model, a mathematical relation, a pattern in data.

Sofia

And the rose.

Julian

And the rose.

Marco

Very well. Something is disclosed. But why make that metaphysically grand? Why not say brains construct experience?

Julian

Because “brains construct experience” already presupposes appearing. The brain itself is something disclosed: in perception, in imaging, in dissection, in diagrams, in models, in thought. The question is not whether brains matter . Of course they do. The question is whether awareness can be explained as a product inside a world that has already been defined without awareness.

Marco

You are saying the usual explanatory order is wrong.

Julian

Yes. That is the heart of Awareness-First Theory.

II. What is, is

Sofia

Then say the beginning.

Julian

The beginning is old. Older than neuroscience, older than modern physics, older than the laboratory. It is Parmenides’ thought: what is, is; what is not, is not.

Marco

That is almost too simple to be useful.

Julian

It seems simple because it is basic. But the most basic things often look empty until one tries to deny them. Try to deny Being.

Marco

Nothing exists.

Sofia

But that sentence exists.

Julian

Exactly. The denial appears. The thought occurs. The utterance is. Even doubt is. Even illusion is, as illusion. Even error is, as error . You cannot get beneath Being, because any attempt to get beneath it already is.

Marco

But Parmenides concluded that change is impossible. Surely we do not want that.

Julian

We need not take every Parmenidean conclusion in a literal, static way. AFT takes the logical root: non-being cannot be an explanatory ground. You cannot explain Being by appeal to absolute non-being. If non-being did anything, produced anything, constrained anything, it would not be non-being.

Sofia

So the point is not that flowers do not bloom and die.

Julian

Correct. Contents arise and pass. Worlds change. Bodies grow old. Percepts flicker . Stars are born and collapse. But the field in which anything appears cannot be derived from what is absolutely not.

Marco

And you identify that field with awareness?

Julian

With awareness in a special sense. Not my private thoughts. Not your introspection. Not a little theatre inside the head. Awareness here means the field of appearing: the primordial disclosure within which anything can be present, measured, doubted, modelled, or explained.

Sofia

Being as appearing.

Julian

Yes. Being is not first given as a hidden object behind experience. It is disclosed as appearing. AFT says: awareness is not something added to an otherwise mindless reality. Awareness is the field within which any reality, any object, any scientific world-picture, can appear .

Marco

But that sounds like idealism.

Julian

It is not subjective idealism. AFT does not say the world is my personal fantasy. It does not deny objectivity. It asks how objectivity itself is disclosed. Objectivity is not a view from nowhere. It is invariant structure stabilised across constrained perspectives within appearing.

Marco

That is elegant, but still very abstract.

Sofia

Then return to the rose.

Julian

Good. You see the rose. Its whiteness appears. Its form appears. Its position on the table appears. But the rose is not given as a chaotic burst of disconnected sensations. It appears as one thing, here, now, in a world. Its whiteness belongs with its petals. The petals belong to the stem. The stem stands in the glass. The glass stands on the table. The table is in the room. The room opens onto the garden. Appearing is coherent.

Sofia

A world appears, not a heap.

Julian

Exactly. AFT begins from that. If a world is to appear to a finite being, appearing must be coherent enough for world-disclosure.

Marco

And that is where your mathematical principle comes in?

Julian

Yes. In shorthand, AFT once used the expression δA = 0, a coherence principle for awareness. More carefully, we can write δC[Γ] = 0. C is a coherence functional over a path Γ through appearance-qualitative space. It says: the unfolding of appearing is not arbitrary. It is stabilised relative to coherence constraints.

Marco

Optimised relative to constraints.

Julian

Precisely. That phrase captures much of the variational family resemblance. Physical systems, living systems, perceptual systems, and finite appearing are not arbitrary. They settle into admissible trajectories relative to constraints.

Sofia

Like the path through the wood that is not free of mud, slope, wind, or effort, but becomes the best possible path given all of them.

Julian

Yes. A coherence functional is like that, but deeper . It concerns the conditions under which a world can continue to appear as a world.

III. Galileo’s shadow The light in the room shifts. The white rose is no longer white in quite the same way. It has become warmer , as if evening has entered its petals.

Marco

But modern science succeeded precisely by ignoring such shifting appearances. Galileo taught us to mathematise nature. Colours vary with light and observer . Measurements do not.

Julian

Galileo’s achievement was magnificent. AFT does not deny that. Mathematical physics reveals invariant structure with extraordinary power . The problem begins when the abstraction is mistaken for the whole of reality.

Sofia

Husserl called us back to the lifeworld.

Marco

The lifeworld?

Sofia

The world of lived experience before theory: bodies, tools, warmth, colour , effort, distance, nearness, meaning, fear , work, conversation, measurement, practice. Science arises within this world. It does not float above it.

Julian

Husserl’s worry was that modern science had performed a kind of substitution. It began with the lived world, abstracted mathematical structures from it, and then treated those abstractions as what was most real. The lifeworld became secondary, subjective, almost embarrassing.

Marco

But abstraction is the price of science.

Julian

Yes. And it is a price worth paying. But Whitehead warned against the fallacy of misplaced concreteness: mistaking an abstraction for concrete reality. He also criticised the bifurcation of nature: dividing nature into the objective world of quantities and the subjective world of colours, sounds, feelings, and values.

Sofia

The rose becomes wavelength, surface, mechanism; the whiteness becomes a private effect.

Julian

And then consciousness becomes mysterious. Because the qualitative field was excluded from the official picture, and now we ask how to get it back.

Marco

That is close to Philip Goff’s point about Galileo’s error .

Julian

Yes. Galileo brackets qualities from mathematical physics. The method works brilliantly. But if one later treats the mathematical abstraction as the complete furniture of reality, consciousness becomes impossible to place.

Sofia

And The Blind Spot makes a similar point: science forgets the experience that makes science possible.

Julian

Exactly. AFT gives this whole lineage a formal expression. It says: Galilean abstraction is a non- injective projection.

Marco

Explain.

Julian

A projection preserves some structure while omitting other structure. Imagine projecting a circle onto a line. Each point on the circle has an x-coordinate. The projection onto the x-axis preserves that coordinate. But the upper and lower points of the circle may project to the same point on the line. Different source states become indistinguishable in the target.

Marco

So the projection is not false.

Julian

Correct. It is exact relative to what it preserves. But it is not exhaustive. It forgets the vertical distinction.

Sofia

The map is useful, but it is not the territory.

Julian

More precisely: the projection is lawful, but non-injective. Many source states can map to one target state. So the inverse is underdetermined. From the projected point alone, you cannot uniquely recover the full source.

Marco

And you think physical description is like that?

Julian

Yes. Physical description preserves invariant relational, mathematical, dynamical structure. But it may quotient over qualitative givenness: the lived appearing of colour , pain, presence, affective tone, indexical here-ness, now-ness. If the qualitative fibre is omitted by the projection, it cannot be recovered from the projected domain alone.

Sofia

The hard problem becomes an inverse projection problem.

Julian

That is the central claim.

IV. The prism and the bundle Sofia picks up the glass prism and holds it near the window. A thin spectrum breaks across the table: red, orange, green, blue, violet. The white rose is crossed by colour .

Sofia

Where are these colours?

Marco

In the light, in the surface, in the eye, in the brain.

Sofia

And in appearing.

Julian

AFT models this by distinguishing appearance-space from appearance-qualitative space. Let A be appearance-space: the structured base of what appears. But A alone is too thin. It does not yet capture lived qualitative character .

Marco

So you add qualia?

Julian

Not as little private objects. As fibre-structure. Imagine each point of appearance-space has a fibre over it: possible qualitative profiles. Colour , valence, bodily tone, intensity, affective orientation, temporal feeling. The total space is E, the appearance-qualitative space.

Sofia

Like blades of grass growing from each point of a field.

Julian

Exactly. The base is A. Over each point is a qualitative fibre. The projection p: E → A sends each point on the blade back to its root. The Qualia Mapping Function, or QMF, selects the qualitative profile associated with an appearance-state.

Marco

That is a poetic image, but also mathematically familiar . A bundle.

Julian

Yes. AFT uses bundle language because it lets us say something precise: physical/action projection may preserve base-level relational structure while forgetting the qualitative fibre. If two full states differ in qualitative character but the projection does not encode that difference, they map to the same physical abstraction.

Marco

And then no inverse can recover the qualitative difference.

Julian

Not from that projection alone.

Sofia

Which is exactly what it feels like when someone says, “Tell me where redness is in the equations.”

Julian

Yes. The equations may capture lawful structure, but if redness as lived was not part of the target vocabulary, it cannot be conjured from the target alone.

Marco

But neuroscience does find correlates of colour experience.

Julian

Of course. AFT welcomes that. Correlates are essential. But a correlate is not an ontological ground. The neural pattern may be the projected organisation of finite appearing; it need not be the generator of appearing from non-appearing.

Marco

That is the move I find hardest. You do not deny the brain, but you refuse to let the brain be the absolute origin of awareness.

Julian

Precisely. The brain is indispensable within the finite organism’s world-disclosure. But the brain, too, appears. It is not outside appearing explaining appearing from nowhere.

V. The Necker cube Julian opens the notebook and sketches a cube: twelve lines, nothing more. Sofia smiles.

Sofia

Ah, the cube that changes its mind.

Marco

The Necker cube.

Julian

Look at it. They look. For a moment, the lower-left face seems forward. Then, without warning, the cube reverses.

Sofia

There. It flipped.

Julian

The lines did not change.

Marco

The interpretation changed.

Julian

Exactly. This is the perceptual inverse problem. The same projected sensory structure is compatible with multiple coherent organisations. Perception is not passive copying. It is the stabilisation of one coherent world-interpretation from a space of possibilities.

Marco

Helmholtz would approve.

Julian

Indeed. Contemporary predictive processing and active inference develop this beautifully. The brain does not receive the world fully formed. It infers hidden causes from partial, ambiguous, noisy sensory projections. It uses priors, precision, context, action, and generative models. The percept is what becomes stabilised.

Sofia

One possibility becomes actual.

Julian

For that being, in that moment, under those constraints.

Marco

So active inference solves local inverse problems.

Julian

Yes. A finite being has partial access. Partial access entails uncertainty. Uncertainty requires inference. Active inference is the finite being’s way of maintaining coherent world-disclosure under uncertainty.

Marco

And in your notation?

Julian

The parent coherence condition δC[Γ] = 0 projects into free-energy stationarity δF = 0 for finite Markov-blanketed beings. But again, not identity. Projection. Free energy is not awareness. It is the projected inferential form of coherence-maintenance under uncertainty.

Marco

And physical law?

Julian

A different projection. Under physical/action projection, parent coherence appears as stationary action, δS = 0. Physical trajectories are optimised relative to constraints. They preserve invariant relational structure. But the physical/action projection may omit qualitative givenness.

Sofia

So there are two great projections: the inferential projection of finite beings, and the physical projection of mathematical law.

Julian

Yes. AFT tries to place them in one architecture without collapsing them into each other .

VI. Markov blankets Marco leans forward now. The scepticism has not gone, but it has become more exact.

Marco

Let us talk about Markov blankets. In active inference, a living system is separated from its environment by sensory and active states. Internal states do not directly access external states. They infer them through the blanket.

Julian

Yes. The blanket separates and couples. It is not a wall. It is a boundary of exchange.

Marco

And Markovian Monism, as developed by Karl Friston, Wanja Wiese, and James Hobson, says that such a system has two aspects, or two information geometries: an intrinsic physical or mechanical description and an extrinsic belief-like description.

Julian

Exactly. That is a very powerful account. It shows how one bounded self-organising system can be described physically and informationally without invoking Cartesian dualism.

Sofia

But does it explain why there is experience?

Julian

That is the pressure point. Markovian Monism is careful: sentience can mean responsiveness to sensory impressions, but phenomenal consciousness or qualia remain harder . AFT can help here. It does not reject Markovian Monism. It gives it an ontological home.

Marco

Meaning?

Julian

The Markov blanket does not create awareness from non-awareness. It is the formal structure by which appearing becomes finite, bounded, perspectival, and inferential. Markovian Monism explains the geometry of bounded sentience. AFT explains why that bounded sentience is not ontologically dark.

Sofia

Not dark because appearing is already luminous.

Julian

Yes, though we should come carefully to luminosity.

Marco

So AFT plus Markovian Monism says: a conscious organism is a finite Markov-blanketed organisation within appearing.

Julian

More fully: a finite Markov-blanketed organisation of appearing whose internal dynamics maintain coherent world-disclosure under uncertainty.

Marco

That is powerful.

Julian

It preserves the mathematics while changing the explanatory burden. We no longer ask the Markov blanket to produce the field of appearing. We ask it to explain how appearing becomes locally bounded and self-maintaining.

VII. The beautiful loop The room darkens slightly. Sofia turns on a small lamp. Its light pools on the table: rose, prism, pendulum, cube, hands.

Sofia

Now the beautiful loop.

Marco

Beautiful Loop Theory, developed by Ruben Laukkonen, Karl Friston, and Shamil Chandaria, proposes that consciousness requires a reality model or epistemic field, inferential competition or Bayesian binding, and epistemic depth.

Julian

Yes. It is one of the most interesting active-inference theories of consciousness.

Sofia

Say it in ordinary language.

Julian

A finite organism needs a world-model: a structured field in which things can be known and acted upon. But not every possible inference enters experience. Contents compete. Those that best cohere with the whole model, reduce uncertainty, and support action win entry. That is Bayesian binding. Then comes epistemic depth: the model is recursively shared through the hierarchy. The system, in a sense, knows that it knows. The reality model evidences itself.

Marco

Field-evidencing.

Julian

Yes.

Sofia

And luminosity?

Julian

Beautiful Loop Theory uses luminosity for the clarity or intensity of knowing or awareness. The idea is that awareness can be dim or bright, peripheral or vivid, shallow or deep. In meditation, lucid dreaming, psychedelic states, or minimal phenomenal experience, the relation between contents and knowing can change. There may be fewer contents but greater luminosity.

Sofia

Like the lamp. It illuminates the rose, but also reveals itself as light.

Julian

Exactly. Beautiful Loop Theory says that luminosity is linked to epistemic depth: the degree to which the reality model recursively knows or evidences itself.

Marco

And you think AFT explains luminosity?

Julian

AFT explains its ontological ground. Beautiful Loop Theory explains its computational modulation.

Marco

Make that distinction precise.

Julian

If BLT says recursive self-modelling produces luminosity, a hard question remains: why should recursion be luminous at all? Why is it not an entirely dark functional loop? AFT says luminosity is not produced from non-luminous mechanism. It is the self-disclosing character of appearing itself, locally organised by a finite active-inference system.

Sofia

Awareness is not dark until a model lights it up. Awareness is the light of appearing.

Julian

Yes. But finite organisms can modulate that light. They can bind contents, deepen knowing, become more or less lucid, more or less opaque to their own processes. Beautiful Loop Theory explains how this happens through recursive generative modelling, precision control, and epistemic depth.

Marco

So AFT plus BLT gives: awareness is primordial appearing, and BLT explains how a finite being recursively organises that appearing into a luminous world-model.

Julian

Precisely. The beautiful loop does not generate awareness from nothing. It is the form awareness takes when it becomes finite, hierarchical, inferential, self-evidencing, and world-disclosing.

Sofia

That is beautiful.

Marco

It is at least very hard to dismiss.

VIII. The pendulum Marco picks up the brass pendulum and draws it aside. It swings: left, right, left, right. The motion is small, regular , almost musical.

Marco

You also use the pendulum.

Julian

As an analogy. For small angles, a pendulum approximates simple harmonic motion. That motion can be represented as a projection of circular motion in the complex plane. A full rotation projects onto a back-and-forth line.

Sofia

The line is not false, but it is not the whole circle.

Julian

Exactly. The observer of the projected line sees oscillation. The richer representation contains rotation. The projected motion is lawful, precise, mathematically describable. But inversion requires additional structure.

Marco

So the example shows how a lower-dimensional projection can be lawful.

Julian

Yes. It does not prove AFT, but it gives the intuition. Physical law may be a lawful projection from a richer appearance-qualitative structure. The target domain can be exact and predictive while not containing everything in the source.

Sofia

Like seeing the shadow of a bird and knowing something real, but not all of the bird.

Julian

Yes, provided we remember that the shadow is not the bird.

Marco

And the error is forgetting that projection happened.

Julian

The forgetting of forgetting.

Sofia

Husserl would smile.

Julian

Perhaps. Whitehead too.

IX. The objection Marco stands and walks to the window. Outside, the garden has deepened into evening. The leaves are now almost black against a violet sky.

Marco

Here is my strongest objection. You say awareness is the field of appearing. But science progresses by explaining appearances in terms of underlying mechanisms. Heat becomes molecular motion. Colour becomes wavelengths and neural coding. Life becomes chemistry. Why should consciousness be different?

Julian

Because in every one of those cases, the phenomenon explained is an object or pattern within appearing. Heat as measured, colour as discriminated, life as organismic process: all can be projected into physical models. But awareness is not one more object within the field. It is the condition of there being any field, object, measurement, or model at all.

Marco

That sounds like making consciousness untouchable.

Julian

Not untouchable. Misplaced if treated as an object among objects. AFT does not prevent scientific study of conscious contents, neural correlates, perceptual binding, attention, report, metacognition, or altered states. It encourages all of that. But it says the existence of appearing as such cannot be recovered from a framework that begins by excluding appearing.

Sofia

The rose can be measured. But the fact that anything is given at all is not another petal.

Julian

Well put.

Marco

Still, could a future neuroscience not close the gap?

Julian

It may close many gaps: how contents are formed, why some stimuli are noticed, how attention modulates precision, how self-models arise, how dreams become lucid, how anaesthesia disrupts integration. But if the basic ontology remains appearance-free, then the question “why is any of this experienced?” will remain.

Marco

Unless we change the ontology.

Julian

Exactly. AFT is an ontological reordering. It does not reject neuroscience; it relocates it.

Sofia

So the explanatory gap is not a hole waiting for one more mechanism.

Julian

It is the sign of a reversed arrow.

X. The inversion

Marco

Let me try to say it. Traditional physicalism says: physical world first, then organisms, then brains, then consciousness.

Julian

Yes.

Marco

AFT says: appearing first, then coherent world-disclosure, then finite beings within appearing, then inferential and physical projections.

Julian

Yes.

Marco

Physical law is not denied. It is a projection preserving invariant relational structure.

Julian

Correct.

Marco

Active inference is not denied. It is the finite being’s way of maintaining coherence under uncertainty.

Julian

Yes.

Marco

Markovian Monism, from Friston, Wiese, and Hobson, gives the bounded geometry. Beautiful Loop Theory, from Laukkonen, Friston, and Chandaria, gives the recursive world-model and luminosity modulation. AFT gives the ontological field.

Julian

Exactly.

Sofia

And the hard problem?

Marco

The hard problem arises when we try to recover qualitative appearing from a projection that omitted qualitative appearing.

Julian

That is the inverse projection gap.

Marco

So AFT does not say physics is wrong. It says physics is a lawful abstraction that becomes metaphysically misleading when mistaken for the whole of reality.

Julian

Yes.

Marco

Then the strongest version of the theory is not anti-scientific. It is anti-forgetfulness.

Sofia

Anti-forgetfulness. That is lovely.

Julian

Science remembers structure. AFT asks science to remember appearing.

XI. The world returns For a while they say nothing. The room is now dim except for the lamp. The rose glows softly. The prism no longer casts a spectrum. The pendulum has stopped. The Necker cube rests in the notebook, still capable of flipping at any moment. From outside comes the sound of a bird, then a car somewhere beyond the garden wall, then the faint clink of a cup as Sofia moves her hand.

Sofia

Listen. They listen.

Sofia

The sound is not an equation. The warmth of the lamp is not a number . The whiteness of the rose is not a coordinate. And yet none of this is against science. It is the world in which science lives.

Marco

I begin to see. The mistake was thinking that because science abstracts successfully from experience, experience is less real than the abstraction.

Julian

Yes. That is the Galilean temptation. The abstraction is powerful, so we enthrone it. Then we are surprised that the throne is empty of colour , warmth, value, and appearing.

Marco

And AFT says: begin again, but not by abandoning science. Begin from appearing, then ask how science arises within it.

Julian

Exactly.

Sofia

The world is not less wondrous because it is lawful.

Julian

Nor less lawful because it appears.

Marco

And awareness?

Julian

Awareness is not hidden behind the world. It is the world’s appearing. Not your private possession, not mine, not a ghost in the head. It is the field within which heads, ghosts, equations, roses, doubts, and galaxies are disclosed.

Sofia

Being shines.

Marco

That sounds poetic.

Julian

Perhaps because the most basic truth can only be approached by both rigour and wonder .

XII. Closing

Marco

Then tell me the theory in one sentence.

Julian

Awareness-First Theory proposes that awareness, understood as the field of appearing, is not generated inside a mindless physical universe; rather , physical law, active inference, finite beings, and conscious world-models are lawful projected organisations within appearing.

Sofia

And in one image?

Julian

A field from which worlds arise; within the field, finite beings form boundaries, infer hidden causes, bind worlds, and illuminate themselves; from the same field, mathematical physics abstracts invariant law; and the explanatory gap appears when one projection is mistaken for the whole.

Marco

And in one warning?

Julian

Do not ask a projection to recover what it was constituted by leaving out.

Sofia

And in one hope?

Julian

That science and experience need not be enemies. The rose and the equation belong together , but not because the rose is reduced to the equation. They belong because both appear within Being. The lamp hums faintly. The rose remains on the table. For a moment, no one speaks, because there is nothing to add. There is the room. There is the light. There is the appearing of it all. And that, before any theory begins, is already something.
